The size of the community and support for both the factory and aftermarket suppliers for parts and maintenance means that the aircraft won’t become obsolete anytime soon. Finally, customers can opt to have their aircraft’s interior, exterior, or both, customized to their liking by the Cirrus Xi design team to make their Cirrus SR22-G6 bespoke. The SR22 is used by flying schools, several air charter and small air taxi carriers, as well as private individuals and companies. It is a development of the Cirrus SR20, with a larger wing, higher fuel capacity, and a more powerful, 310-horsepower (231 kW) engine. It's always wise to book your shore excursions in advance of your cruise to the Caribbean. The restyled power lever borrows design cues from the Vision Jet, while updated side yokes provide comfort with convenience right at hand.

The EVS increases situational awareness by using infrared imaging to provide more information on the MFD such as cloud tops, terrain, etc. A brand new 2022 Cirrus SR22-G6 costs $722,900 without any additional features. There are additional packages that can be added to the aircraft at the customer’s discretion to improve its performance which we’ll discuss later. The GTS version of the SR22 includes all the upgrade packages the company has to offer.

From transition training to recurrent courses, our award-winning training program increases your confidence in the pilot’s seat with direct access to engaging courses and online content on your schedule. The endurance ring shrinks—or expands—as you richen or lean the mixture. There’s just no excuse for running out of fuel in these aircraft, given this level of fuel planning integration and simplified fuel management. Cirrus nailed the ergonomics and much of that has to do with the Garmin Perspective avionics suite—which now includes the integrated GFC700 autopilot as standard and EVS infrared camera as optional. With the 40 portion of the rear seat folded down, we loaded a few full-size golf bags, luggage, flight bags and some other space and weight-eating gear with ease.

Safety record

With a 315hp (235kW) turbocharged Continental TSIO-550 engine, SR22Ts achieve up to 213kt cruise speed and 1,021nm (1,891km) of range, according to Cirrus’ website. The new “2022 G6 SR” is 9kt (17km/h) faster than earlier SR models thanks to “sleeker wing and tail surfaces and redesigned wheel pants”, Minnesota-based Cirrus says on 11 January. The Cirrus SR22 is a single-engine four- or five-seat composite aircraft built since 2001 by Cirrus Aircraft of Duluth, Minnesota, United States.

Operating Weights

Do pilots think through the ramifications of launching into known ice, though, or does having the TKS impart a sense of invulnerability? That’s a topic worth further examination, but it matches another core Cirrus philosophy to give the pilot the latest tools and then train them in applying good decision-making to their application. As we rode in the golf cart to retrieve our rental car from the sleepy airline terminal next door to the Marathon General Aviation FBO, I thought back to the journey that had brought us here. The adventure started the morning before in the cold at my home field, Morristown Municipal Airport (KMMU) in New Jersey. The cost for different items varies depending on a lot of factors. The figures are just to give us a rough idea of what to expect in terms of owning and operating the Cirrus SR22.

The Cost of Maintaining a Cirrus SR22

We had a pilot report both from my own flight earlier that day and various confirmations of icing from the commercial aircraft making the approach from the south into Knoxville. Fortunately for our mission, our mount had the TKS deicing/anti-icing system installed, providing for flight into known icing. Combined with a high ceiling and surface temps above freezing, having a FIKI-approved airplane meant we could go rather than wait. We met up at breakfast the next morning to discover a 400-foot overcast layer that I confidently predicted would burn off by the time we got to the airplane. All set to depart but without a flight plan in the system, we tried our luck by asking clearance delivery for an IFR routing through the Miami Class B to Marathon.

Founded in the mid-1980s in a converted seaside motel, the hospital has helped rescue and rehabilitate more than 1,000 sea turtles that are brought in from all across the Florida Keys. The Turtle Hospital has operating rooms, X-ray machines, and a seawater swimming pool where the turtles can contentedly frolic. More than 40,000 people visit the hospital each year, making it one of the premier attractions in the Florida Keys.

All we have left are the laws of physics — unglamorous and unyielding. To go faster or farther than a similarly shaped airplane, yours must either be smaller or it must have more power. For example, the cost of fuel is different depending on the region that you are in.

Question: Why does the parachute have to be repacked every 10 years?

To this end, Cirrus has created a series of eight SR22Ts, starting around number 8,000, in a limited-edition run guaranteed to catch attention on the ramp once the company releases these flying works of art into the wild. As we neared KATL, Atlanta Approach told me to expect the visual to Runway 8L and issued vectors at 5,000 feet for what essentially turned out to be a very wide left-hand traffic pattern. “Cleared for the visual Runway 8L, follow the MD-90, caution wake turbulence,” he shot back, apparently satisfied that we weren’t going to gum up the works. That evening, the four of us had dinner at the Lighthouse Grill next to our hotel. Jim brought his laptop loaded with hundreds of photos from the shoot.

In addition, the parachute had been repacked in 2021, which is a significant cost saving for a future owner. The most popular options are the factory air conditioning unit and the built-in oxygen system for high-altitude operations. There is an option to switch out the standard metal propeller for a composite propeller built by Hartzell to Cirrus’ specifications.

The aircraft has a total of 735 flight hours on the frame and engine. It has also been upgraded with Berringer brakes, a composite propeller, an electronic ignition system, and new fuel injectors. This GTS version is also equipped with the Flight Into Known Icing package. Rich-of-peak climb is a simple full-power affair and lean of peak is equally as easy, especially with the Perspective Lean Assist mode, which is standard on the normally aspirated model.

When you enter the SR22, the most striking thing is the yoke or lack thereof. The controls are what Cirrus calls a side-yoke, and have more in common with the side-stick controls you find on an Airbus. The interior of the SR22-G6 is a masterclass on how to build a cockpit.

We decided I’d airline it home and chose Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (KATL) as our destination. Besides offering convenient nonstop airline service, I was stoked to get the chance to add to my logbook a landing at the busiest airport in the country. After sunset, we made a couple of low passes down the runway so that we could capture another of the unique features of the G6 SR22, the ethereal Spectra LED wingtip and downwash lights.

At KTYS, we took up less than 2,000 feet of runway in the SR22, while a full-power takeoff in the turbo model at KHGR took up a little bit less. Rpm on both models is governed (2,500 on the SR22T and 2,700 on the SR22), so moving the power lever full forward takes you to 110 percent power for takeoff in the turbo and 100 percent in the SR22. While the power lever combines throttle and prop controls, the mixture remains separate. The engine-management system provides a green arc on the fuel-flow display indicating the range in which the mixture should be set, with a cyan line for the recommended fuel flow in certain cases. At a cruise setting of 75 percent and optimum altitude of about 8,000 feet, the SR22 trues out at 181 knots or a bit higher on about 18.4 gallons per hour. The fuel burn is higher than what Continental specifies, but it is what the engine needs to run comfortably rich of peak.

The SR22 G6 Perspective+ upon which the limited-edition series is based debuted in early 2017, and there has been speculation as to when a new model will land on the scene. An Atlanta-based company is putting together a fractional ownership program comprised of SR22s. Currently, AirShares Elite has an SR20 in its fleet, but by midsummer it will take delivery of five SR22s with another five to be delivered later this year. With that in mind, it is no wonder that the Cirrus SR22, with its 310-horsepower engine, outperforms its 200-hp little brother, the SR20, in every way.

The skies were clear until we reached Charleston, where a wide band of heavy rain slid across Georgia and South Carolina. The conditions were predicted to remain crummy into the afternoon. As I swung my bags onto the golf cart’s back seat and hopped aboard, I couldn’t help but think how right she was. This particular SR22T GTS, a 2017 Generation 6 model, was, in truth, the nicest on the planet by virtue of the fact that it was the only G6 yet in existence.
